Regardless of citizenship, criminal history and background, the US constitution upholds a set of rights that protect you from unjust treatment.

Do

  • Reserve the right to have an attorney present before speaking with the police.

  • Calmly ask if you are being placed under arrest.

  • If being placed under arrest, request to know the reason.

  • Inform the police about reserving your right to remain silent.

  • Remain calm and abstain from displaying a hostile demeanor.

  • If injured by law enforcement, seek medical attention as soon as possible and document all injuries along with how you obtained them.

  • Remember the officer's badge number and name.

  • Write down and remember as many details as possible regarding your interaction with the police.

Do Not

  • Do not argue with law enforcement or use threats.

  • Do not use physical force against the police.

  • Do not resist arrest.

  • Do not make sudden, unexpected movements.

  • Do not answer questions regarding your potential charge without a lawyer present.

  • Do not lie to law enforcement.

  • Do not sign anything without an attorney regardless of what it is. 

  • Do not provide any potentially incriminating information to the police

  • Do not run or try to evade law enforcement.
